Competition rounds will be held during week 5-7, with finals in week 10.

What is Mooting?

Mooting is one of the traditional law student competitions, and has existed for centuries. This competition involved teams of two or three (depending on whether you are competing in the junior or senior moot), arguing a case on appeal. There are two speakers per side: a senior counsel and a junior counsel and judges have the option of asking questions throughout the duration of your speaking time. Marks are awarded on the basis of your written submissions as well as your oral presentation and how well you handle questions from the bench.

Why should I moot?

Mooting, among many other things:
  • Improves your confidence and public speaking skills.
  • Gives you the opportunity to research and learn areas of law you might never have otherwise come across.
  • Gives you the chance to see whether a career as an advocate is for you.
  • Helps you develop your research skills and makes researching for essays a whole lot easier.
  • Looks great on your resume and gives you that extra something that will differentiate you when you’re competing for clerkships, internships and graduate positions.
  • Allows you to meet heaps of other law students who will provide great networking contacts in future years.
  • Makes you eligible to be considered to represent UC at a range of national and international competitions.

What if I’ve never mooted before?

No experience is required to compete in First Year Mooting, however it is strongly advised that you attend the information session that will be held by the ISAACS Law Society and that you have a look through the rules linked above.
